You do not need to live in our service area to become a Crisis-Line Volunteer. Volunteers just need to be available by cell phone during their scheduled shift.
Our answering service receives the crisis call, then calls the volunteer that is scheduled to be on-call. Our answering service passes off the caller information to the volunteer and the volunteer then returns the crisis call. Volunteers may also be patched through to the caller by our answering service. Volunteers never receive crisis calls directly from the caller. Our answering service will always receive the initial call.
Our Volunteer Coordinator sends out a monthly calendar and volunteers can select from the shifts that are open. On Monday through Friday, on-call shifts are 4 PM to 12 AM and 12 AM to 8 AM. Saturday and Sunday shifts are 12 AM to 12 PM and 12 PM to 12 AM. Volunteers can choose to take one shift or as many shifts as they would like. Many volunteers take the same shift each month, but volunteers can select from any available shifts.
On average, our volunteers receive one crisis call per shift.
Should you miss a call for whatever reason, the answering service will then pass the call on to the scheduled staff member.
A staff member will always be available should you have any questions or would like help with a crisis call.
Our answering service always receives the initial call. If you are patched through, the caller only sees our crisis-line number on caller ID. During volunteer training, our staff will teach you how to block your phone number from showing up on caller ID when you are returning a crisis call. Our answering service and staff will never provide any of your personal information to callers.
