stalking

Understanding stalking

At The Bridge, we recognize the pervasive and deeply distressing impact of stalking that leaves victims feeling trapped and vulnerable. We hope to provide vital resources in our commitment to empower survivors and raise awareness about this often misunderstood threat.

While we may associate stalking with celebrities, one in three women and one in six men will have experienced stalking in their lifetimes. In just 1 year, an estimated 13.5 million people in the U.S. experience stalking by individuals such as a current/former intimate partner.

what is stalking?

Stalking extends beyond physical proximity; it's a pattern of unwanted attention, intrusive behaviors and persistent harassment directed at an individual. It induces fear, anxiety and a sense of vulnerability.  This unsettling behavior extends beyond the physical realm, infiltrating various aspects of a survivor's life.

Stalking can manifest in multiple forms, including but not limited to relentless surveillance, repeated unwanted communication, uninvited visits, and the unauthorized tracking of an individual's online activities. These acts are not isolated incidents but rather a sustained and calculated effort to exert control and instill fear in the survivor, often leaving deep emotional scars.

  • In-Person Stalking: involved the physical pursuit and surveillance
  • Cyberstalking: extends the threat into the digital realm with online harassment, unwarranted tracking and invasion of privacy through electronic means

recognizing the signs

Identifying the subtle signs and diverse manifestations of stalking is necessary for survivors and their support networks. By understanding the complexities of stalking, we empower individuals to break the silence, seek help, and take proactive steps towards their safety and well-being.

While this list isn't exhaustive, you may be a victim of stalking if someone:

  • Repeatedly calls your phone, including hang-ups
  • Follows you, shows up wherever you are
  • Sends unwanted gifts, letters, texts or emails
  • Damages your home, car or other property
  • Monitors your phone calls or computer use, possibly through spyware
  • Uses technology, like hidden cameras or GPS to track where you go
  • Drives by or lingers near your home, school or work
  • Threatens to hurt you, your family, friends or pets
  • Performs other actions that control, track or frighten you
  • Uses other people to try to communicate with you, like children, family or friends

safety planning

Trust your gut and take threats seriously. If you feel unsafe, seek support and don't downplay the danger you feel.

And if you believe you may be in danger, develop a safety plan:

  • Change your routine
  • Keep important phone numbers and contact information in a safe place
  • Keep important documents (driver's license, birth certificates and immigration documents) in a safe place
  • Have a trusted friend or relative go places with you
  • Make a plan for what you will do if the stalker shows up at your home, work or school
  • If you have a protection order, keep a copy with you at all times

Saving evidence and documenting the stalking behavior is important to establish a pattern, especially if you want to pursue a protection order, divorce, custody or criminal charges. It can also help you remember what all has happened if you need to make a police report or testify in court at a later date.
