Elder Abuse

Abuse in Later life

Domestic violence and sexual assault hurt at any age. Abuse in later life is not uncommon and it is reported that 1 in 10 Americans over 60 have experienced abuse. Despite its prevalence, cases of elder abuse often go unreported. On average, older survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault experience abuse for twice as long before seeking help compared to individuals under the age of 61. To prevent and eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault in our communities we must recognize the signs of elder abuse and provide support to the individuals impacted by abuse.
